SUMMARY:An Evening with Xavier F. Salomon
DESCRIPTION:Ukrainian Institute of America \npresents  \nAn Evening with Xavier F. Salomon\nThis past spring\, after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia\, the UIA was contacted by the team at The Frick Collection\, our neighbor on Manhattan’s Museum Mile. Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator\, Xavier F. Salomon\, had returned from a trip to Poland\, where he noticed that Ukrainian citizens were welcomed at museums and other cultural venues at no cost. The Frick reached out to us for assistance in letting Ukrainian passport holders know that they can visit the Frick free of charge. \nInspired by The Frick Collection‘s acclaimed video series Cocktails with a Curator\, the Ukrainian Institute is pleased to welcome Xavier Salomon for a special evening discussion about Antonio Canova’s “The Peace of Kiev\,” followed by Ukrainian-themed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. \nThe selection of Anthony Canova’s sculpture “The Peace of Kiev” for the evening’s focus is filled with irony. On the eve of the Napoleonic invasion of Russia in 1812\, the sculpture was commissioned by a wealthy nobleman for his St Petersburg palace\, in homage to his family\, that had purportedly ended three wars. The sculpture resided in Russia until after World War II\, when it was moved to the Khanenko Museum in Kyiv\, where is remains until today. As so many works of art throughout Ukraine\, it is today hidden and protected from Russian missiles. Wrought with symbolism\, this sculpture reminds us of the unpredictability of world events as well as of the prospect for peace. \nPlease join us for a fascinating evening! \n__________ \nTickets \nGeneral admission – $125 per person \nUIA Members – $100 per person \nAt the door – $150 per person \nAn Evening with Xavier F. Salomon
