Through music\, the program invites remembrance and tribute\, honoring lives affected by a tragedy whose impact Ukrainians still feel today. \nThe MATI concert is a ticketed event and advance registration is requested. \nGeneral admission: $40\nUIA Annual Friends\, Students\, Seniors: $30\nUIA Members: $20 \n  \nTICKETS\n  \nPROGRAM\n \nJohannes Brahms Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor\, Op. 101\nCatherine Likhuta Tangle and Tear for Piano Trio\nViktor Kosenko Two Pieces for Violin and Piano\, Op. 4 bis (Dreams\, Impromptu)\nVasyl Barvinsky Piano Trio in A minor\nMykola Lysenko Elegy for Cello and Piano \nPERFORMED BY\nSolomiya Ivakhiv\, violin\nDarrett Adkins\, cello\nMelvin Chen\, piano \n  \nABOUT THE PERFORMERS \nSolomiya Ivakhiv\, Professor of Violin and Viola and Head of Strings at the University of Connecticut\, and Professor of Violin at the Longy School of Music of Bard College\, was named a Merited Artist of Ukraine (2021). She is Artistic Director of Music at the Institute (MATI) in New York and the Caspian Music Festival in Vermont. Her recordings for NAXOS\, Brilliant Classics\, and Centaur feature both Ukrainian composers and major classical repertoire\, and she is a dedicated champion of new music with numerous world premieres to her credit. \nCellist Darrett Adkins is acclaimed for his dynamic career as soloist\, chamber musician\, and educator. A faculty member at both The Juilliard School and the Oberlin Conservatory\, he is a noted advocate for contemporary music\, with premieres and recordings of works by composers including Milton Babbitt and John Zorn. A former member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE)\, he performs widely with the Oberlin Trio and the Daedalus Quartet. \nPianist Melvin Chen is known for compelling solo and chamber performances and holds advanced degrees from Harvard University (PhD in chemistry) and The Juilliard School (piano and violin). He serves as Deputy Dean of the Yale School of Music and Director of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. His acclaimed recordings on Bridge Records — including Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations — affirm his stature as a musician of insight and artistry. \n  \nABOUT MUSIC AT THE INSTITUTE (MATI) \nIn its 37th season\, MATI presents world-class musicians from Ukraine\, Europe and the US\, performing in the intimate setting of the concert hall in the Ukrainian Institute of America’s historic\, landmark building. Currently under the leadership of Artistic Director\, violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv\, the MATI series offers audiences a thoughtfully curated selection introducing both established and lesser-known works by Ukrainian composers alongside beloved chamber music repertoire. Throughout its history\, MATI has commissioned new compositions by emerging and recognized Ukrainian composers\, celebrating and commemorating significant milestones in Ukrainian history and in the history of the Institute itself.
