SUMMARY:The Crime of Genocide
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, NOVEMBER 18  \nRegistration starts at 4:30PM. \nProgram starts at 5PM. \nRussia’s brutal war against Ukraine has been characterized by numerous violations of international law. Legal scholars have recently considered the crime of genocide and the destruction of cultural heritage in the context of the war against Ukraine. The Ukrainian Institute of America and National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” have convened a distinguished panel of international law experts and NGO representatives to discuss the legal questions as well as specific acts of destruction of culture and heritage preservation. The discussion is particularly timely and poignant given the 75th anniversary of the Genocide Convention\, the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Ukrainian Institute and the Holodomor commemoration earlier in the day at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The subject is of interest to lay people and to lawyers\, as the brutality continues and public international law evolves. \nSPEAKERS: \nDr. Volodymyr Venher\, Dean of the Faculty of Law National University – “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”; Associate Professor in the Department of General Theoretical Jurisprudence and Public Law; Visiting Research Fellow of the Institute of European and Comparative Law \, University of Oxford \nDr. Dmytro Koval\, Associate Professor in the International Law Department of the Faculty of Law National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”; Board Member of the Nobel Peace Prize recipient organization Center for Civil Liberties \nDr. Jens Meierhenrich\, Stephen and Barbara Friedman Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia Law School; Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science \nDr. Kateryna Goncharova\, Ukrainian Heritage Crisis Specialist\, The World Monuments Fund\, Kyiv\, Ukraine \nRoksolana Makar\, Heritage Documenting Expert\, Ukrainian Heritage Monitoring Lab\, Kyiv\, Ukraine \nIhor Poshyvailo\, Director\, Museum of the Revolution of Dignity\, Kyiv\, Ukraine \nMODERATOR: \nTaisa Markus\, Visiting Professor\, Faculty of Law National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” \n  \nRegister \nThe Crime of Genocide
