Join Film at the Institute to experience the story of New York City’s beloved Veselka Restaurant, a symbol of community and resilience in the heart of Little Ukraine. Narrated by David Duchovny and featuring music by David Sanborn, the documentary captures the struggles and triumphs of the Birchard family as Jason Birchard navigates the challenges of stepping into his father’s role at the restaurant in the midst of the war in Ukraine. The screening will be followed by an engaging talkback with:
Jason Birchard, third-generation owner of Veselka, humanitarian and winner of many awards, including the 2024 UIA Friend of Ukraine Award. Jason has preserved his family’s legacy while making Veselka an essential part of NYC’s Ukrainian Village and beyond.
Michael Fiore, New York-based writer, producer, and director, known for documentaries like Floyd Norman: An Animated Life. Michael first connected with Veselka’s unique community impact while studying at NYU and now aims to bring global awareness to the Birchards’ humanitarian work through this powerful film.
We look forward to sharing this memorable night of film, food, and community with you!
