Cassandra – A Staged Reading of the Poem by Lesia Ukrainka

May 9, 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

The Ukrainian Institute of America proudly presents a staged reading of Cassandra, the iconic dramatic poem by Ukrainian literary legend Lesia Ukrainka. Written in 1907, Cassandra is a timeless fusion of feminist insight, spiritual struggle, and political urgency. More than a century later, it still resonates—challenging authoritarianism and illuminating the ongoing fight for truth, particularly in the face of Russian aggression.

Set at the end of the Trojan War, the poem follows the prophetess Cassandra, cursed by Apollo so that her true visions are never believed. While her warnings are ignored and her brother offers comforting lies to appease a fearful public, Cassandra wages an inner battle to speak truth to power—even when no one will listen.

In the context of Russia’s ongoing war on Ukraine, Cassandra gains striking relevance. Since the 2014 invasion, control over truth has become a battleground. The Russian state continues to deny Ukrainian sovereignty and obscure its violence—from Mariupol to Lviv—echoing the very dangers of distortion and silencing that Ukrainka foresaw.

The performance is directed by Artemis Wheelock and produced by Illia George and Kaitlin Rowan. This staged reading of the 2021 English translation by acclaimed poet, Nina Murray, is part of a larger initiative that will culminate with a full theatrical performance of Cassandra in autumn 2025.

A light reception and talkback with the cast and team will follow. Advanced registration is requested.
