OUR 2025 HONOREES

Each year, the Ukrainian Institute of America proudly recognizes individuals whose leadership, generosity, and dedication have made a lasting impact on our community and on Ukraine. We are honored to celebrate the following recipients of our 2025 Gala Awards:

UIA Legacy Leadership Award
Charles Podpirka

In recognition of his deep commitment to advancing the mission of the Ukrainian Institute of America and his enduring leadership in strengthening Ukrainian cultural life in New York and beyond.

A longtime philanthropist and dedicated member of the UIA Board, Charles “Charlie” Podpirka has played a pivotal role in safeguarding the Institute’s historic landmark home. Drawing upon his experience as a successful real estate entrepreneur, he has funded numerous critical restoration projects and provided strategic guidance to ensure the building’s preservation for future generations. His deep commitment to his Ukrainian heritage extends well beyond our walls, reflected in his decades-long support of a broad range of humanitarian relief efforts and diaspora organizations. His legacy continues through his three sons—Roman, Adrian, and Victor—and his three grandchildren.

UIA Friend of Ukraine Award
Michele Anenberg Poma

In recognition of her exceptional leadership and compassion in supporting Ukraine’s wounded heroes through her work as International Director of Partnerships and Collaborations at Team Superhumans.

Since the organization’s founding, Michele Anenberg Poma has been a driving force behind the Superhumans Center for War Trauma in Lviv and Dnipro. She has worked tirelessly to raise awareness, build partnerships, and secure critical resources so those injured by Russia’s war of aggression receive comprehensive, world-class care. The Superhumans Center provides prosthetics, reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation, hearing restoration, and psychological support for both adults and children—restoring not only physical capability but also confidence and independence. Through Michele’s efforts, countless Ukrainian soldiers and civilians have been empowered to reclaim their lives and return to society with dignity and purpose.

UIA Friend of Ukraine Award
Alex Drueke

Honoring his extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

A U.S. military veteran from Alabama, Alex Drueke served 12 years in the U.S. Army, including two tours in Iraq. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he felt called to defend democracy once again. After training Ukrainian soldiers and serving with the GUR (Military Intelligence) north of Kharkiv, he was captured and endured over 100 days in Russian captivity—surviving daily torture, starvation, and other war crimes. Since his release, Alex has dedicated himself to advocacy and humanitarian work for Ukraine: raising funds, lobbying Congress, training the National Guard, and supporting Ukrainian defense manufacturers. His resilience and willingness to raise his voice for Ukraine exemplify the highest ideals of courage and humanity, inspiring others around the world to stand with Ukraine.

UIA Volunteer of the Year Award
Kvitka Semanyshyn

Honoring her outstanding service, dedication, and contribution of time and talent that enrich the Ukrainian Institute of America and inspire the community around her.

Kvitka Semanyshyn has devoted her life to strengthening Ukrainian community life in the United States. She has worked tirelessly to preserve cultural heritage, support Ukraine, and unite generations of Ukrainian Americans as advisor to the Ukrainian Permanent Mission to the United Nations and through her active involvement with the Ukrainian Institute of America, the Ukrainian World Congress, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, the Providence Association of Ukrainian Catholics, and numerous other diaspora organizations.
