MATI Concert and Paintings by Preston Trombly
January 28, 2024 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
“Music at the Institute” presents a chamber music concert featuring the North American premiere of Ukrainian composer Valentyn Sylvestrov’s Three Songs for Soprano and Piano. In addition to Nino Rota’s Trio, the full ensemble will perform Arnold Schoenberg’s Op. 21, known as “Pierrot Lunaire.” This collection of musical vignettes was the inspiration for Preston Trombly’s 21 collage/paintings, which the artist has donated for auction to support humanitarian relief work in Ukraine.
The concert will be followed by a reception and Silent Auction.

Reflections on “Pierrot Lunaire”
Collage/Paintings by Preston Trombly
Inspired by Arnold Schoenberg’s Op. 21, “Pierrot Lunaire,” artist Preston Trombly has created 21 unique collage/paintings reflecting the 21 sections of “Pierrot.” The artist writes:
I first heard “Pierrot Lunaire” when I was a young music student. It hit me like a ton of acoustical bricks! Even now, after years of repeated hearings and study it still does, but in a most positive way! For some time now I’ve been working in the visual arts. These 21 collage/paintings from 2023 are my reflections on the 21 sections of “Pierrot.” I did not try to visually replicate the feelings or structure of each piece. Rather, I let the music and texts of each section ‘sink in’ and then responded in a more intuitive and spontaneous way with collage materials, paint and paper.

We are pleased to present these pieces at auction and are extremely grateful to Preston Trombly for his generous donation of these artworks for the purpose of raising funds for humanitarian relief efforts through the UIA’s “Help Ukraine” fund.
This auction is online until January 28, 2024 at 3PM EST. After the conclusion of the online portion of the sale, bidding will continue live, at the UIA, in conjunction with the Music at the Institute concert, where “Pierrot Lunaire” will be performed.
A reception will follow the concert and the Silent Auction will close at 7PM EST.
