History and Contemporary Significance of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

The lecture will explore the role of the Lavra in shaping Ukrainian culture and historic memory, its significance in contemporary Ukraine, and its place within Ukraine’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
The presentation is in the context of the photo exhibition on view at the UIA
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra: 975 Years of History – 100 Years of Responsible Preservation
The exhibition presents a unique visual record of approximately 150 years of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’s history, featuring photographs dating from the late 19th century to the early 21st century. The photographs document the Lavra’s architecture and the people who lived, worked and worshipped there, while also reflecting the destruction and restoration of its buildings over different historical periods. The exhibition also draws attention to the threats facing the Lavra today as a result of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
