Book Presentation: The Price of Freedom by Tatiana Lysenko

In her new fiction novel, “The Price of Freedom,” author Tatiana Lysenko tells a thrilling story about the first female Ukrainian journalist accredited in the U.S. The book was inspired by true events.
“The Price of Freedom” follows the life of Slava, a semi-fictitious reporter, who considers herself a true Ukrainian, but with views on the modern world that are not understood in the post-Communist society. She is suffocating in the country where she was born and seeks to find a new home where there is no persecution, no fear for the future and no bribery or corruption – a place where people live full lives rather than merely surviving.
Through the life of Slava, the author wants to bring a reader’s attention to the fact that Ukrainian people are awakening, and they want to live in a democratic European country. “I tell in my book the truth about the reality of present-day Ukraine,” says Lysenko, “why people fight for their freedom and human rights today.”
An excerpt from “The Price of Freedom”:
“My grandmother’s death changed all. I began to question my choices and wondered if my drive and dreams were waste. After all, if human life is worth so little, why strive for anything? I found myself losing interest in what used to excite me… But then one day, as I was strolling through the street of my new homeland, I saw a little flower peering through the thick snow spread on the field like white frosting … Although it looked very fragile, it was obviously also very strong. And as I was inspecting that little purple flower, I saw my drive and determination gathered on the purple petals.”
About the Author
Tatiana Lysenko earned a PhD from the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University. She is a former professor at George Washington University and is well known for her numerous publications about ancient history and culture of the Slavic world. Lysenko has also written and co-authored several books in Ukrainian. She is listed in the 2010 Gold Book of Ukraine and the 2012 version of “The Woman Face of Ukraine.”
