About the Film:
La Palisiada, Ukraine’s official submission for the 2025 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, examines the chilling connection between two gunshots fired 25 years apart. Set in 1996 Ukraine, the film portrays a nation still grappling with the lingering shadows of Soviet oppression. At its center is Bohdan, a man sentenced to death for allegedly murdering a Colonel—a case that led to Ukraine’s final execution.
Following two investigators, their families, and the profound, lasting effects of a justice system plagued by haste and corruption, the film offers a reflection that resonates powerfully with Ukraine’s present-day challenges. Writer-director Philip Sotnychenko uses VHS-inspired visuals to evoke the fragmented temporality and disorientation of the post-Soviet era, drawing viewers into a world shaped by systemic corruption and alienation.
