Join us for a Ukrainian Easter egg-making workshop and transform a real egg into a work of art! Pysanka artist, Laryssa Czebiniak, will guide participants as they create their own masterpieces using traditional patterns and methods. Open to all skill levels (ages 11+), the event includes all supplies and refreshments. Please arrive 15 minutes early. Pre-registration is required, as space is limited.

About Laryssa Czebiniak
Laryssa Czebiniak of Larysanky specializes in a pagan-turned-Christian artform to create pysanky – Ukrainian Easter eggs. This ancient tradition employs the wax-resist batik technique in which intricate designs are written on eggs with hot beeswax. Each symbol carries layers of meaning – imbued with wishes of protection, renewal, and prosperity. In the spring, Laryssa crafts pysanky adorned with traditional motifs, many of which have been passed down through generations. During the winter season, she creates non-traditional pysanky ornaments, drawing inspiration from enduring Ukrainian cultural patterns. She also works in the delicate technique of etched eggs, known as travlenky. Every egg she produces is entirely hand-crafted and one of a kind.
As a member of the Ukrainian diaspora, Laryssa vividly recalls making her first pysanka at the age of five—a cherished family tradition that continued year after year. After moving to New York City, she began hosting intimate pysanka gatherings for friends, fostering community through the shared act of creation. Over time, this personal practice grew into public workshops for both adults and children, often held at the Ukrainian Institute of America. Laryssa’s demonstrations have been featured at venues such as the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall, 92Y StreetFest, Pelham Art Center, and even on a Brighton Beach boardwalk during a voter registration drive. She finds joy in teaching and sharing this time-honored folk art with all who are curious, ensuring its rich legacy continues to thrive.
“Larysanky,” is the blending of the artist’s first name “Laryssa” and “pysanky” and is the name she uses for her art and workshops. Laryssa sells her pysanky at bazaars and on Etsy.
