This Saturday, November 18, the Ukrainian-American community in New York will mark the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor, Stalin’s 1932-1933 Famine Genocide in Ukraine.
Today, November 16, Ukrainians mark 65 years since the death of “the unforgettable Aida,” “the enchanting Cio-Cio San,” and “the ideal Brunhilda” – Solomiya Krushelnytska.
Art at the Institute announces a special exhibition of forty intaglio prints by Ukrainian artist Oleh Denysenko, introducing recent works and archetypal selections from his graphic oeuvre of the past decade. The exhibition will open Friday, November 10, 2017 and continues through November 29. Curated by Walter Hoydysh, PhD, director of Art at the Institute, this exhibition marks the artist’s second solo show with The Ukrainian Institute of America.
Art at the Institute, the visual arts programming division of The Ukrainian Institute of America, kicked off the Fall 2017 season on Friday evening, September 29, to an enthusiastic gathering of friends and new faces with an exhibition of thirty expressionist landscape paintings by Ukrainian artist Roman Luchuk. Present at the opening reception, Mr. Luchuk warmly greeted the attendees by thanking the UIA for hosting his original artwork, and for the opportunity of introducing his imagery to a new audience. Curated by Walter Hoydysh, PhD, director of Art at the Institute, the exhibition marks the artist’s first solo showing in the United States.
Today, on October 26, 2018, we are marking 45 years since the death of Ihor Sikorsky (1889-1972), Father of modern helicopters.
Ihor Sikorsky, Ukrainian-born American aviation pioneer and father of the modern helicopter, was born in Kyiv in 1889. His mother was a doctor and his father a psychology professor at Kyiv University. Homeschooled by his mother until age 9, he acquired a love for science through the flying machines in Leonardo da Vinci’s journals and Jules Verne’s books. By age 12, the budding engineer had already built a rubber band powered helicopter.
On October 1, 2017, the Ukrainian Institute of America organized the Ukrainian booth at the International Way section of the 92nd Y Street Festival. The International Way is a 14-year tradition, and this was the second year that Ukraine was represented.
